Avoiding cosmetic acne-Skin Care Tips You Should Know

Were you aware that cosmetic acne is actually different from other types of acne? Cosmetic acne is not caused by the conditions that can lead to other forms of acne, such as cystic acne, but rather by the products that you use on your skin. It can look like small red bumps and can pepper your cheeks and forehead.

Sometimes, when you have a breakout, you cover your face with makeup in order to cover the spots up. Ironically, this can lead you to breaking out even more.

Here are some tips to help you combat cosmetic acne:

Cosmetic acne-skin care Tip #1- Avoid fragrance in your cosmetics

Added fragrance can cause your skin to become irritated. Don’t think that just because a product is unscented means that it doesn’t include fragrance. Sometimes fragrance is added in order to hide the power scents of some of the ingredients. Try to purchase products that state that they are “fragrance-free” or “hypo-allergenic.” Try to stay away from fragrances in the ambrette, bergamot, cinnamate and musk lines. Do a patch test on a part of your skin that doesn’t show, first, before applying it to the rest of your face.

Cosmetic acne-skin care tip #2- Beware of oils

Not all oils are comedogenic. Petroleum products, sunflower oil and mineral oils do not infiltrate into the pore. A lot of cosmetic oils, still, can intensify acne so it is better to stay away from them. Lanolin, a fatty acid derived from sheep’s wool, is one of the most acne activators. Isopropyl Myristate, which encourages smooth, level application in a lot of foundations, is such a forceful infiltrator that it’s the active ingredient in a lot of products that eliminate rust. As a general rule, products identified as “oil-free” and “non-comedogenic” are less prone cause breakouts and clog your pores.

Cosmetic acne-skin care tip #3- Be careful of eye creams

Due to the fragility of the skin surrounding your eyes, creams produced for this area are often more viscous than regular facial moisturizers. Be careful to use these products for this area of your face only. If they get on other parts of your face, they can lead to breakouts.

Cosmetic acne-skin care tip #4- Wash your face

When you sweat, the sweat can mix with your makeup and lead to other complications. Make sure that you wash your face if you have been sweating. You might also want to exfoliate as well.

Cosmetic acne-skin care tip #5- Beware of face powders

Mica is the common mineral that is found in facial powders. Mica particles can cause clogging in the hair follicle, so try to avoid powders that contain a lot of shimmer. Coal tar derivatives are also used in some red powders and these substances are comedogenic, as well. Instead, try to find powders that use carmine, which is a natural, healthy cosmetic colorant. It is also better to use gels or powders than creams because they are less likely to be comedogenic.
