Pregnancy Skincare

Pregnancy skincare is an important part of staying healthy while pregnant. It is often said that women have a glow about them when they are pregnant. Their hair and skin take on a shine and healthy look. Is this because of the extra vitamins that are taken or because of a change in hormones? This controversy may never be settled because there is a case to be made for both sides.

When you consider using skin care products while pregnant, it is important to remember that not all skin care products are safe during this time. You must be cautious in the use of topical skin lotions and creams. And remember that not all women’s skin become healthy in appearance, but can go the opposite way and skin problems can occur.

Skin Problems
Acne, discoloration of the skin and rashes can occur when women are pregnant. As stated before, it can be because of the extra hormonal activity. There is a skin problem that is called melasma, cholasma or pregnancy mask. This occurs when patches of dark, pigmented skin appear on the face. This can be brought on as a result of pregnancy hormones and/or sunlight exposure.

There is also a linea nigra or line of pregnancy that may appear down the center of the belly. There is not a specific treatment at this time but staying out of the sun seems to help reduce the discoloration. While the jury is still out on many topical products, it is safe to use a concealer.
Skin itches around the belly area also occur during pregnancy. Part of this is because of hormones and the other is because of the skin stretching. Sometimes rashes can develop and can create a lot of discomfort. Pregnancy skincare will remain safe if you use a soft wash cloth and warm milk, apply to the skin or add a handful of oatmeal to a warm (not hot) bath.

Safe Pregnancy Skincare
Should you be concerned about what you put on your face when you are pregnant? Are lotions or other topical skin care products safe for you and your baby? Some of the products you use may not be harmful to you but could be to the baby.

You should not use any products with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or any with retinoid. These have been found to be unsafe for use during pregnancy. What you can use is sulphur-based topical products, glycolic acid or alpha hydroxyl acids. If all else fails you should ask your medical provider for a safe alternative.

Healthy Lifestyle
Along with pregnancy skincare you should maintain a healthy lifestyle by not using tobacco, alcohol and getting plenty of rest. Drinking lots of water and participating in physical activity will also help in keeping your skin healthy.

Pregnancy skincare can be an important part of staying healthy when you consider that some products may not be safe. Check with your medical provider or pharmacist if you have any questions about the products you are using.
